Millions of dollars arriving at the perfect time for researchers

Millions of private dollars are arriving at the perfect time for researchers at Pennsylvania universities seeking to replace waning federal support, experts said.The Pittsburgh Foundation on Thursday announced the first set of grants from the largest gift in its 68-year history. Nearly $1.6 million from the estate of Charles E. Kaufman will go to Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Pittsburgh, Penn State, Drexel and Temple.

Amount donated in 2010: $53.3 million

Kaufman was an investor and retired director of purchasing for the pharmaceutical giant Merck & Company. Mr. Kaufman, who died in September at the age of 97, bequeathed an estimated $50-million to the Pittsburgh Foundation. Most of the gift, between $35-million and $40-million, will go to a fund he established at the foundation in 2005, the Charles E. Kaufman Foundation. ...

Charles E. Kaufman Obituary

Son of the late Myer M. and Minnie Hermann Kaufman. Grandson of the late Charles and Rosa Kaufman, two of the original settlers of Clarion, Pa. In addition to his parents and grandparents, Kaufman was preceded in death by his infant brother, M.M. Kaufman, Jr., and his beloved sister, Virginia Kaufman, who died April 18, 2008.
